Tracks, Lie’s, and Exceptional Magic

1 Introduction Sometimes a solution to a mathematical problem is so beautiful that it can impede further progress for a whole century. So is the case with the Killing-Cartan classification of semi-simple Lie algebras [Killing 1888; Cartan 1952]. It is elegant, it is beautiful, and it says that the 3 classical families and 5 exceptional algebras are all there is, but what does that mean? The con...

Some Indications that the Exceptional Groups Form aSeriesArjeh

This is a written version of the talk delivered on Feb 6, 1996 at the SMC conference , Amsterdam. Last Summer, P. Vogel noted that the dimensions of the exceptional Lie algebras are given by ?2 (+ 5)(? 6) (? 1) for an appropriate value of , as well as other uniform behavior of the exceptional Lie algebras with regard to the parameter. Inspired by this, P. Deligne conjectured that there might be...

Exceptional case studies.

CASE STUDIES ARE RARE in our journals and for good reason: without a sample, it is hard to assess the representativeness or uniqueness of an individual. The case studies that do get published are therefore so obviously exceptional that we cannot help but be interested in where nature or nurture has taken one of our species. The individual is usually an athlete, and the science amounts to identi...
